Foley Catheter for Seniors

Medication, medical equipment, and other medical materials are a necessity for millions of senior citizens across the United States each year. Some senior citizens cannot afford the medical equipment needed to keep them healthy day to day, which means that they will need to find an alternative way to purchase or rent that equipment. A piece of medical equipment used commonly amongst senior citizens is a Foley Catheter. The Foley Catheter is a flexible tube that is inserted through the urethra of the patient into the bladder to extract urine from the body. This occurs during urinary catheterization in a doctor’s office, a hospital, or in the patient’s home while under home nursing care.

The name of Foley Catheter comes from the inventor of this important piece of medical equipment, Frederic Foley. Foley was a medical student studying in Boston, Massachusetts when he created the catheter in the 1930s. The first company to adopt the brand new design was C.R. Bard Inc. of Murray Hill, New Jersey. Once the design was adopted and production began, C.R. Bard Inc. named the catheter after its creator. There is a major flaw with the use of Foley catheters and that is the fact that they can cause Urinary Tract Infections, most often in males.
