The main cause of these infections is usually that the bladder is unable to properly eliminate all the urine. This buildup of excess urine in the urinary tract can lead to infections. An intermittent catheter may help to prevent these infections by helping the body fully eliminate urine.
The intermittent catheter is a temporary catheter system that is put in place by the patient. These catheters, unlike permanent catheters, are not surgically inserted. Instead the patient learns how to properly place the catheter when it is needed.
