Conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) cause swelling of the legs, which is a result of blood clots forming in the deep veins of the body. Compression socks work by providing graduated pressure to the legs. Pressure applied to the lower legs, ankles, and feet increase blood flow by compressing surface veins, arteries, and muscles. The graduated pressure causes improved blood flow back to the heart instead of allowing blood to pool in the feet and ankles.
