Foley Catheter for Seniors

Medication, medical equipment, and other medical materials are a necessity for millions of senior citizens across the United States each year. Some senior citizens cannot afford the medical equipment needed to keep them healthy day to day, which means that they will need to find an alternative way to purchase or rent that equipment. A piece of medical equipment used commonly amongst senior citizens is a Foley Catheter. The Foley Catheter is a flexible tube that is inserted through the urethra of the patient into the bladder to extract urine from the body. This occurs during urinary catheterization in a doctor’s office, a hospital, or in the patient’s home while under home nursing care.

The name of Foley Catheter comes from the inventor of this important piece of medical equipment, Frederic Foley. Foley was a medical student studying in Boston, Massachusetts when he created the catheter in the 1930s. The first company to adopt the brand new design was C.R. Bard Inc. of Murray Hill, New Jersey. Once the design was adopted and production began, C.R. Bard Inc. named the catheter after its creator. There is a major flaw with the use of Foley catheters and that is the fact that they can cause Urinary Tract Infections, most often in males. Infections occur when bacteria travel up the catheter into the bladder, where the urine can become infected. Read more…

Discreet Healing With a Leg Bag

There are many medical reasons why a person would be prescribed a catheter to help with their urination. The key word there is “help.” In most cases the use of a catheter is a temporary procedure related to a post operative condition. The idea is to help with elimination and monitoring. Thanks to advances in the design and making of medical supplies there have been new discreet leg bags developed that provide greater mobility and comfort for the patient. The goal is to get back to a normal routine as quickly and safely as possible.

There are some distinct design features that you should be looking for when shopping for a leg bag. The first issue is comfort. The leg bag should be equipped with a sterile fluid pathway that is constructed with materials that are not only durable but also comfortable. As the title implies, a leg bag is going to be strapped to the patient’s leg. If it is uncomfortable then it’s not serving its purpose. The valves of the leg bag should be positioned on the outer portion of the bag so as not to rub against the skin of the leg. And the drain valve itself should be able to open and close with ease. You also should find a leg bag in the right size depending on the needs of the patient. Read more…
