Medline Offers Alarms to Help Keep Night Wanderers Safe
Would an alarm that alerts you when someone in your household gets out of bed be helpful? There are two types of patient alarms offered by Medline that will let you know when someone rises from their bed at night. You can choose the alarm that best suits your needs for customized performance.
Infrared Motion Detector Alarm
An infrared motion detector alarm attaches to a headboard or bed frame, or can be mounted elsewhere in a room depending on your needs. When movement breaks the infrared beam, an alarm or chime will alert you. You can also set up a remote alarm, so the detector stays silent in the room, but is activated at a remote location.
This type of alarm is very easy to set up with a hook and loop strips that are included with your purchase. You may also choose to mount it with a bracket you can purchase separately. The remote alarm is also sold separately. The infrared motion detector alarm by Medline operates on a 9-volt battery.
Pressure Sensitive Pad Alarm
If you prefer not to use an infrared detector, a pressure sensitive pad can be used to let you know when someone gets up out of bed. A battery powered alarm is triggered when pressure is removed from the pad. This is an easy to use device that doesn’t require installation. It operates on 4 AA batteries.
People often think of motion detection or pressure sensitive alarms in terms of wandering patients, such as those with Alzheimer’s. These alarms alert household members when an individual with dementia who is prone to wandering is up and about and potentially endangering herself at night.
This is one use for these two types of alarms offered by Medline, and they may be useful in other situations, too. If you have a child or a loved one at home that is prone to sleepwalking, a motion detector or pressure pad alarm could help prevent accidents or injuries. These devices can also help with young children who tend to wake up and wander at night while wide awake, as well.
Your choice of alarm will depend on several factors. If you prefer not to suddenly disturb the person who will trigger the alarm, the infrared detector with remote alert will be the best choice. If you are a sleepwalker however and you would like to be awakened when you rise during sleep, a pressure sensitive pad alarm may be an easy solution.
