The Science Behind Biofreeze
The product Biofreeze is an analgesic medication that is actually natural in origin, unlike most topical painkillers. It is a product that contains Ilex, an herbal extract of a South American shrub. This analgesic is popular worldwide and used to promote health and wellness. Doctors have discovered that it can also help to alleviate pain—even intense pain due to arthritis, muscle injury and chronic backaches.
Biofreeze does not use petroleum or wax, though it does contain other ingredients besides the Ilex. Specifically, this includes water, menthol, camphor, isopropyl alcohol, carbomer, triethanolamine, silicon dioxide, methylparaben, FD&C yellow #5 and FD&C blue #1. However, it is not as greasy, as foul-smelling or as staining as most topical analgesics. Some stores are now selling the Ilex ingredient with other helpful ingredients, such as Chinese Ginseng.
Why is this substance so fast acting? Why does it penetrate the skin so deeply and last so long? The methodology behind this product is that Ilex results from a counter-irritant effect. It overrides noxious pain signals going to the brain through a process known as gate control. So in essence, the produce affects the central nervous system as well as the skin and muscle area. The product also uses a process of cryotherapy, which refers to the use of low temperatures in medical therapy. The goal behind using colder temperatures is to decrease cellular metabolism while increasing cellular survival. The result is a decrease in inflammation and thus pain.
Biofreeze can be used to help a variety of pains, including arthritic pains, muscle sprains and strains, injuries, aches and other intense pains you might experience. This product (or line of products) is classified as a topical analgesic with a “counter irritant” mechanism. Basically, the topical formula is so powerful that it overrides the pain signals to the brain. You don’t even sense the pain! How’s that for alleviation?
This product is usually not sold in stores, but is sold to doctors. However, it is now available online for both patients and doctors. This is not a prescription medication, despite its very fast-acting effects. Still, it is only available only through authorized dealers.
If you have been experiencing pain for a while then try something new. Don’t continue to take oral medications that just barely make an impact. They may be doing more damage than good. Instead, try something much stronger and yet safe and doctor approved. Try Biofreeze!
